Adult Bedwetting: The Shocking Truth

Adult Bedwetting: The Shocking Truth

Bedwetting is supposed to be a childhood problem, right? The reality is, adult bedwetting (also called nocturnal enuresis) can affect up to 6 million adults at any time. That figure only includes the individuals who report experiencing this condition. Despite how its popularity, wetting the bed often goes untreated and can lead to further complications in some extreme cases.

Adult Bedwetting Can Be Embarrassing

Wetting the bed in adulthood can be embarrassing. Many of the stigmas surrounding adult bedwetting can make bedwetters feel like they cannot speak about their issue to doctors or their loved ones. However, without a support group or sufficient professional help, sufferers of nocturnal enuresis often feel they lack control of their bodies and suffer from low self-confidence, increased stress levels, and low self-esteem.

Without official treatment, people who occasionally wet the bed try to control the situation by simply avoiding the causes of the problem. Instead of seeking lasting treatment, they limit their behavior or change habits by avoiding travel, vulnerable situations, or avoid taking risks that lead to a happy, fulfilling life.

These behaviors are not only inconvenient, but offer only a temporary solution to adult nocturnal enuresis.

Real Reasons For Adult Bedwetting

There are two main reasons why adults can suffer from wetting the bed. The first, being primary adult bedwetting. This type is similar to childhood bedwetting and will be explained in more detail below. The second reason is commonly known as secondary adult enuresis. This type usually comes from a different, more serious condition. Both types have successful treatments available.

Primary Adult Bedwetting Causes

Only about 2-3% of adult men and women suffer from primary enuresis which, for them, has happened since childhood. The known causes for primary adult bedwetting follow below:

1. Smaller Functional Bladder Can Cause Adult Bedwetting

This is when your brain sends signals to tell your body that the bladder is full and to release when it’s actually not full yet.

2. Low Antidiuretic Hormone Can Cause Adult Bedwetting

This problem occurs your brain does not produce enough of the  Antidiuretic hormone that tells your body it’s time to go, and your bladder overflows.

3. Deep sleepers Are Often Affected

Yes. It might just be as simple as you being a deep sleeper.

These causes can be easily treated through a few different methods. One of the more popular solutions is using a bedwetting monitor to help train you to wake up when nature calls. Click here to learn more about how bedwetting alarms work.

This can be easily treated and you can get help to solve your adult bedwetting by talking to your doctor about the treatment methods.

Secondary Adult Bedwetting Causes

While primary adult bedwetting causes are easily identified, the causes of secondary adult bedwetting can be more difficult to identify. Theses causes can arise from pre-existing medical conditions or other issues. In other words, there is an underlying problem that developed in their body since they became an adult. These problems are often more difficult to diagnose and can be harmful if left untreated.

Common Secondary Adult Bedwetting Causes

1. Diabetes Can Cause Adult Bedwetting

High sugars in the blood pulls water out of muscles (called osmolality) and causes frequent urination.

2. Obstructive Sleep Apnea Can Cause Adult Bedwetting

OSA can cause adult bedwetting by decreasing arousal response, and by increasing intra-abdominal pressure during obstructive respiratory events, which places more pressure on the bladder. Decreased arousal response can make it more difficult to wake up when your bladder needs you to.

3. Prostate Cancer or Enlargement Can Cause Adult Bedwetting

Enlargement or cancer of the prostate in men can cause adult bedwetting because of pressure placed on the bladder.

4.Urinary Tract Infections Can Cause Adult Bedwetting

If regular adult bedwetting isn’t something you normally suffer from, but it happens occasionally, a urinary tract infection could be the culprit. This is especially common for women.

How To Prevent Adult Bedwetting

Once you have talked to your doctor and found the underlying causes of your adult bedwetting, it’s time to treat the bedwetting itself. Hopefully, your doctor will be treating the actual problem, but you will need to be proactive about getting your quality of life back.

Hi everybody,

I’m a 36 year old bedwetter. I have a wife and 2 kids. I was a bedwetter as a kid, but slowly slowed down to the point of being completely dry for about two years in my late teens. In my 20s y bedwetting slowly returned, as a random accident ever now and then, and around age 30 is suddenly escalated to the point of needing diapers every night again.

I’m also a moderator of www.reddit.com/r/adultbedwetting/ and welcome anyone like us to join.
